Treat threshold height as an assembly decision
Door threshold height on a tiled terrace cannot be settled by choosing a neat visible step. The finished tile level, waterproofing connection, frame drainage, supporting layers and outlet route must work together. For a Cyprus refurbishment, the critical question is whether the proposed construction leaves a dependable water-management detail at the door after every layer has been installed.
This matters especially when somebody proposes tiling over an existing finish. A modest increase in floor height may consume space needed for a membrane termination or interfere with a frame opening. The existing terrace may already have little usable height, even when the door currently opens and closes normally.
Before ordering tiles, arrange a waterproofing assessment that specifically includes the threshold junction. Ask for a measured section and an explanation of the proposed water route. A photograph with a tape measure beside the visible sill is useful background, but it cannot reveal the concealed connection.
Measure from a shared reference level
The first dependency is a reliable level survey. Record the interior finished floor, external tile surface, accessible frame features, outlet level and any visible waterproofing termination against one reference. Include the ends of the doorway and changes across its width. Otherwise, separate measurements can appear compatible while describing different points on a sloping or uneven surface.
Identify what lies below the tiles where records or agreed openings permit. The proposed section should show each retained and replacement layer rather than treating adhesive, drainage material and waterproofing as negligible. It should also distinguish the level of the walking surface from the level at which concealed water is intended to drain.
This is the first stop point: do not approve the finished tile elevation while the waterproofing connection remains unknown. The investigator records the existing condition; the person responsible for the detail coordinates the proposed levels. The owner approves a defined arrangement instead of asking individual trades to solve the height conflict during installation.
Choose the waterproofing and drainage arrangement
Once levels are established, select a suitable terrace assembly and trace its drainage route to an outlet. Surface water and water reaching a drainage layer may have different routes. A channel immediately outside the door is useful only when its connection, discharge and maintenance access are resolved. A grate above an enclosed pocket does not establish effective drainage.
Schlüter’s A.1 balcony assembly shows a sloped screed, bonded waterproofing, sealed joints and a tile finish; it specifies a 1.5–2% slope for that assembly. This is an example of coordinated system construction, not a universal slope instruction for every terrace. See Schlüter’s bonded waterproofing assembly.
The design should explain how the membrane meets the door frame and adjacent walls, including the corners at both ends. If the frame cannot accept the intended connection, stop before covering the terrace. The resolution may require a different assembly, local reconstruction or door work.
Resolve the low-threshold trade-off explicitly
A low transition can improve access, but it also changes the space available for waterproofing and drainage. Decide whether access needs require a reduced step, and then commission a detail that addresses those needs alongside exposure and water management. Do not use an accessibility preference as an instruction to raise the tiles until they meet the internal floor.
Schlüter’s TROBA-LINE information discusses a 150 mm connection height by reference to German DIN 18531-5 and describes reduced-height door arrangements with suitable drainage measures. It also identifies stepless transitions as special constructions. That is manufacturer guidance framed around a German standard; it does not establish a Cyprus statutory threshold dimension. See Schlüter’s threshold drainage guidance.
The second stop point is therefore approval of the actual low-threshold detail. The designer should state the selected system requirements and any project-specific compliance checks. The door supplier confirms the frame interface, while the waterproofing contractor confirms that the specified connection can be installed.
Sequence door work before finishing the terrace
If the frame must be replaced, raised or otherwise altered, coordinate that work before setting the final terrace levels. The waterproofing team needs access to the connection, and the door installer needs to understand which surfaces and openings must remain available. Finishing tiles first can leave both trades trying to create an inaccessible junction from the outside.
Approve a sample junction or inspect the exposed detail before concealment where appropriate. This inspection should address continuity at corners, the intended termination and clear drainage openings. It should also confirm that the specified construction fits the measured space. A visual inspection cannot establish every performance characteristic, but it can identify a junction that was never built as drawn.
Waterproofed.cy’s terrace and balcony tiling service includes waterproofing and associated assembly layers within its stated scope. Use that coordination opportunity to request one agreed section and work sequence, with door alterations and specialist design identified separately where required.
Test a proposal with a hypothetical level conflict
Consider a hypothetical terrace where the existing tile surface is 70 mm below a visible frame reference. An owner wants another tile layer adding 18 mm overall. The remaining visible separation would be 52 mm, but neither number establishes the usable waterproofing connection height. The frame reference may not coincide with the membrane termination, and the concealed layers are still unknown.
A measured investigation finds that the planned overlay would also restrict access to an existing drainage feature. The project team compares removing the old finish and rebuilding a thinner coordinated assembly with changing the door detail. It does not declare the overlay acceptable simply because the sliding panel still clears the new tile.
The owner chooses between drawn alternatives after receiving their consequences for access, disruption and drainage maintenance. Before ordering materials, the responsible designer confirms the detail and the relevant suppliers confirm their interfaces. These hypothetical dimensions illustrate why arithmetic at the visible sill is insufficient; they are not recommended threshold dimensions.
Hand over a maintainable threshold
Before the junction is concealed, keep photographs showing the membrane connection, corners and drainage components. The completion record should identify the finished levels and any changes from the approved section. If a substitution changes the assembly thickness, the level calculation must be revisited before installation rather than corrected with an unplanned local ramp.
Agree the final inspection and any suitable testing with the responsible parties. Also record how a channel or frame drainage opening will be cleaned without damaging the waterproofing. Maintenance instructions should identify accessible components and removable covers, so future owners do not unknowingly block the route with sealant, decking or another tile finish.
Request an assessment of the terrace threshold before committing to resurfacing. Supply the door model if known, photographs of the junction and your access requirements. The useful outcome is a coordinated sequence with approved levels, identified responsibilities and a clear stop point whenever the concealed construction differs from the proposal.
Frequently asked questions
Is 150 mm the legal minimum threshold height in Cyprus?
This article does not establish that. The cited manufacturer page discusses 150 mm in the context of a German standard. A Cyprus project needs its applicable requirements and selected detail checked.
Can new terrace tiles be laid over the old ones?
Only after checking retained-layer suitability, finished levels, drainage and the door connection. Door clearance alone is insufficient.
Does a channel outside the door make a flush threshold acceptable?
A channel is one component. Its discharge, membrane connection, maintenance access and relationship to the door must form part of an approved arrangement.
Who should settle the final external tile level?
The person coordinating the terrace detail should settle it using the measured survey and supplier requirements, with input from the door and waterproofing trades.
